Such a cool experience. Catch the instrumentals my group wrote (and a couple of my engineering shots) on the WMN YT channel!

Spent the weekend playing with Udio, and after making 60 “songs,” have learned a lot and finally published one track. Some thoughts:- The sound quality is better than Suno and it feels like you get more fine-grained control. But Suno seems to make catchier music more easily, and also does longer songs.- Getting good tracks from Udio involves experimenting with things like genre tags, extending songs in either direction, and using custom lyrics both to update vocals and insert directions like [guitar solo].- You also need patience! Getting good stuff can take a few generations. Think of it like jamming with friends, and riffing off each other.- It’s great for imagining new genres and seeing what they sound like. The attached, for example, blends Louisiana blues and dubstep.- I can see this leading to a lot of musical experimentation. I think there will be some great new songs that come directly out of Udio, but also artists incorporating it into music and video in ways beyond just generating and publishing. Overall, I feel like this will lead to more, not less, musical creativity.https://lnkd.in/gNrQz8TP

In the past, music that contained explicit content often carried a "Parental Advisory" label, indicating that it may not be suitable for all audiences. Alongside these versions, there were also clean versions of the same albums released on CDs. The benefits of having both options include:1. **Accessibility for All Audiences**: By providing clean versions of music alongside the explicit versions, artists can cater to a wider audience, including those who prefer not to listen to profanity or explicit content.2. **Parental Control**: Parents can have peace of mind knowing that they have the option to choose the clean version of an album for their children. This allows them to control the content their children are exposed to while still allowing them to enjoy music.3. **Artist Flexibility**: Offering clean versions of music gives artists the opportunity to reach a broader audience, including those who may not typically listen to music with explicit content. It allows artists to showcase their work to a wider demographic.4. **Respecting Diverse Preferences**: Not all listeners appreciate or enjoy explicit content in music. Providing clean versions respects the diverse preferences of different listeners and ensures that everyone can enjoy the music in a way that aligns with their values and comfort levels.Having both explicit and clean versions of music available on CDs benefits artists, parents, and listeners by providing options that cater to different preferences and needs.www.lloydcaulker.net

Thanks to Christopher f*cks and Jackie Morton of the IPW (plus the 149 attendees who joined us this morning) for a discussion around estate planning misconceptions. It was great to see so many faces just before the Easter 🥚🥚🥚 🐰 break. Here is a link to the video I shared which demonstrates the true value of legacy planning - leaving a legacy of joy is surely something to aspire to?? Thanks also to Abby Gardner for organising. I hope you all have a wonderful Easter. https://lnkd.in/eJ7irG7X#estateplanning #legacyplanning #intergenerationalplanning

Why My Favourite Genre of Music Isn’t the Best Model for Software Engineering🎶 I like progressive rock. There, I’ve said it. I’m a fan of prog. I like other genres, but prog is No.1 for me. And much as I find listening to it as I work inspiring this is purely in the sense of the joy it brings. I wouldn’t follow its model when designing a new system. You see as much as I’m happy when, in the 18th minute of a 27-minute song suite, the band head into a quick 11/4 widdlefest of an interlude, I admit that the complexity that makes me love progressive rock isn’t something to bring to software design.👩💻 Good software engineering is about keeping things simple – simple in exactly the same way prog isn’t. You shouldn’t want to be adding the coding equivalent of a compound meter or sus chord or building a Theory of Everything* codebase. That way lies programming madness. (*It’s a prog concept double album.)🎸 If I was to pick a genre of music whose form could be used as inspiration, it would be 50s Rock & Roll.Rock & Roll gets the job done by keeping things simple and delivering things people like listening to. 🎼 There aren’t all that many chords. those there are, tend to be straightforward – no B7add13(No5) here. (Yes, that’s real.) And the time signature and tempo are perfect to dance to – if you like dancing. I don’t, hence prog.Coming straight out of the gate with high complexity is the last thing you want when building a software system. Your first release should be a Rock & Roll number, not the widdly lunacy of a full-blown prog concept album.😎 Remember the 10th Agile Principle “Simplicity – the art of maximizing the amount of work not done – is essential.” Rock & Roll does.Rock & Roll songs embody this principle - verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-end. Job done.💑 They also have a single concise message – usually how much a boy loves a girl or vice versa.Progressive rock songs often tell lengthy fantastical stories of star-faring civilisations or vast AIs controlling humanity, split into multiple sections, each with its own structure and story content. And don’t be surprised if you encounter a 10-minute guitar noodling section imitating whale song slong the way.👹 You could say Rock & Roll follows the Single Responsibility Principle whereas prog goes full-on nuts, bad monolith.Rock & Roll like applications are also great places for junior coders to cut their teeth. Much as I love listening to King Crimson, it’s not something a novice guitarist should start with.👑 If you’re curious what I mean, check out Fracture by King Crimson – there’s link below although if you don’t want to listen to the whole 10 minutes, skip to 5:05 and watch the next minute or so. Let’s just say your guitar teacher wouldn’t give you that in lesson number 1. Not unless they’re a sad*st.So, listen to prog by all means. But code Rock & Roll.#codecomplexity #keepitsimple #softwareengineering #coding #solidprinciples

Small (handbell) ensembles are much more the order of the day after mid-May, at least in the Northern hemisphere. Pretty much everyone in the United States syncs their calendar to the end of the school year, and so family vacations and summer programs ramp up, resulting in a local population decrease as people get out of town. So when this happens, large handbell ensembles also shut down for a couple of months (but not until they've performed their spring concerts!).Despite the temporary exodus, we've found that there are a lot of folks who want to keep the handbell music going during the summer. Most of the time it's to add our special kind of music to their church services and social gatherings. Sometimes it's to take advantage of the opportunity to try something new and challenging or to acquire new skills, such as four-in-hand ringing.Whatever the reason, we have lots of handbell scores suitable for this. Our music for six, eight, twelve, or sixteen bells can be played with two to eight ringers. Many of our "Surprisingly Easy"™ eight-bells scores, in particular, can be learned in just a few rehearsals and are ideal for summer services and events. If you haven't tried small ensemble ringing, this is a great way to start. You only have to find a friend or two to join the fun, and decide on which piece(s) you'd like to play!https://lnkd.in/gCQPsn7T

Thanks to Ned Baier, AICP, Nousheen Rahman, Kristin Combs, MPH and USF Urban and Regional Planning for organizing last night's wonderful film screening and discussion. Thanks to Dayna Lazarus, AICP for as always asking the right questions. Planners talk about equity as a matter of ethics, but we don't always focus on what equity looks like in practice; discussing policy approaches like basic income guarantee programs is a great way to enter these conversations. And what great timing, the NPR Morning Edition show today featured a story about that program and -- surprise! -- efforts of some state governments to forbid cities and counties from participating. https://lnkd.in/eXAFAbke

Like this message, that was left on an Insta post yesterday (https://lnkd.in/eHTT_EN3) that featured an illustration I’d done of Hunter S Thompson.I actually did a short HSTWAVE mix 5 years ago (https://linktw.in/KcPHTK), back at the dawn of the Meaningwave experiment, and people have been asking me to get it on DSPs ever since. Well, we are coming to close of this most auspicious year of our lord, 2023 AD, and I have finally made a space in the relentless glory of the Meaningwave release schedule, and lo, the first song from that mix, The High Watermark (https://lnkd.in/eG5qnrts), based around one of the most shimmering of moments in that collection of nothing but shimmering moments that is Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, which I read aged seventeen, and that changed my life immediately, and powerfully, for good and ill…THE HIGH WATERMARK is out now on all platforms!(https://lnkd.in/eG5qnrts)In other Meaningwave news! I just finished work on that most beloved of traditions, the annual ATD Christmas album! The release date will be announced as soon as it is back from mastering!Upon finishing that, I went straight back to work on MEDITATIONS VOL. II, which is in the final stages of creation. I am very excited and awash with joy to be able to report that Pete Parada, formerly of The Offspring and now of The Defiant, has contributed drums to a number of songs on the project…ANDTHEYARENAPALM!Speaking of Pete, and The Defiant, they just released their debut LP.IF WE'RE REALLY BEING HONEST is that other most rare and mythical of things, AN ACTUAL ALBUM that TELLS A STORY and takes the listener on a JOURNEY.... It brought to mind flashes of tons of immortal music I love, The Clash, The Jam, Sham 69, Pogues, Squeeze, and contains a gang of instant classics that are gonna require extended versions for people to bellow along to at live shows. Check it out here!(https://lnkd.in/ezgex3Q6)OK! I shall return to mixing MEDITATIONS II. It is the greatest thing I have yet to be anywhere close to, and I am very excited to hear what it sounds like when it’s finished.
